The word Oregano is derived from the ancient Greek ‘oreiganon’ meaning ‘ornament of the mountain’.
The Greeks and Egyptians used the wild herb that grew in profusion on their hills to flavour their food and wines. Today Oregano still flavours Mediterranean cuisine, especially Italian food where it works well with the acidity of tomato based sauces. What is less well known is that it is also found in many Mexican dishes, so use Oregano to add an authentic Mexican flavour to your chilli con carne as well as an Italian flavour to your spaghetti bolognaise.
